Funding for health promotion

VicHealth supports hundreds of different organisations through a range of funding schemes, which are explained here.

Funding rounds become active at various times throughout the year. Guidelines are available when funding is open.

Each type of grant has its own guidelines and/or application forms. Other forms you may need are:


Active Club Grants

Eligible organisations: Clubs/organisations that facilitate or organise community based sport and active recreation.

Availability: Funding is open. Applications close 4 December 2009.

Recognising that equipment plays an important role in reducing barriers to participation in physical activity, particularly by those most disadvantaged and in junior participation, we offer funding for sports injury prevention equipment, essential equipment, portable shade and volunteer training.

Active Participation Grants

Eligible organisations: Grant applications must be developed by at least 3 partner agencies, one of whom must be either a Regional Sports Assembly or a sporting organisation that primarily covers the relevant metro LGA.

Funding for the Active Participation Grants - Metropolitan Round has been allocated
Funding for the Active Participation Grants - Regional and Rural Round has been allocated

These grants aim to increase participation in community sport and active recreation across Victoria, particularly for people with disabilities and those from low socio-economic, Indigenous and new arrival communities.

ARC Linkage-Projects - Industry Partner Grants

Eligible organisations: Victorian organisations deemed eligible by the Australian Research Council (ARC) who are applying for an ARC Linkage-Projects funding.

Availability: Funding is closed.

These grants support collaborative research projects between higher education researchers and industry in Victoria that have applied for ARC Linkage-Projects funding.

Building Bridges Scheme: Together We Do Better

Eligible organisations: Not-for-profit community groups and organisations, local governments, educational institutions and non-government organisations.

Availability: Funding has been allocated to 2011.

Building Bridges aims to improve mental health and wellbeing by promoting positive contact and cooperation between people from migrant and refugee backgrounds and others in the community. In 2006, grants of up to $20,000 were provided for initiatives that bring migrant and refugee groups affected by discrimination and social exclusion together to work on cooperative activities with members of the wider community.

Conference Support Scheme  

Eligible organisations: All not-for-profits

Availability: This scheme is closed.  

Through this fund, VicHealth provides limited support to conferences conducted by other providers to facilitate knowledge transfer in the field of health promotion. With a maximum of $60,000 in this financial year, small grants ($1000–$10,000) are available to organisations for the purposes of organising and implementing health promotion conferences.

Discovery Grants    (renamed Research Grants in 2009)

These grants are specifically designed to support early exploration of novel research that has the potential for improving population health in Victoria.

Food for All Program

Eligible organisations: Local government

Availability: Current funding is allocated until 2008.

This program is targeting disadvantaged communities in eight local government areas by providing funding to improve access to nutritious food. The funding is being used to address some of the difficulties that might influence people’s eating habits. It focuses on assisting local government authorities to prioritise food access issues when planning transport routes, housing developments, and employment and education programs.

Participation in Community Sport and Active Recreation Scheme

Eligible organisations: State and Regional Agencies whose purpose includes the facilitation, or organisation, of sport and active recreation as a major responsibility. These organisations are:

  • State Sporting and Active Recreation Associations
  • Peak Sport and Active Recreation Industry Organisations
  • Regional Sports Assemblies

Availability: Funding closed

Grants are available at a minimum of $30,000 up to a maximum of $250,000, excluding GST, per year for up to four years to support organisations to work at a state, regional and local level to increase participation in community sport and active recreation, particularly for people with disabilities, those from low socio-economic, Indigenous and new arrival communities.

Partnerships for Health Scheme

Eligible organisations: State Sporting Associations

Availability: Funding currently allocated.

Under this scheme, VicHealth funds 50 State Sporting Associations to create healthy environments within their sporting clubs and venues by encouraging 100% smoke-free policies, responsible alcohol management, healthy eating options, sports injury prevention and sun protection as well as working to increase the level of participation in their sport. With VicHealth’s support, sporting clubs can develop healthier and more family-friendly sporting clubs at the local level.

Walking School Bus Program

Eligible organisations: Local councils

Availability: Funding is closed.

VicHealth’s Walking School Bus Program is a partnership between local government councils/shires and community agencies who work with local primary schools to establish Walking School Buses in their municipalities. The purpose of the program is to create change in the school travel patterns of Victorian primary school children.

Young People, Technology & Social Relationships Grants

Eligible organisations: Partnership of not-for-profit community groups and organisations, local governments, educational institutions and non-government organisations.

The Young People, Technology and Social Relationships Grants aim to capture the ways in which information and communication technologies influence social inclusion and subsequently wellbeing for young people.
