Health and ecology forum


As part of VicHealth's exploration of ecology and health we hosted hosted a round table forum with 22 key stakeholders from around the country on 25 July 2005.


FORUM PRESENTERS & PRESENTATIONS

Dr Glenn Albrecht  (Senior Lecturer in Environmental Studies in the School of Environmental and Life Sciences, University of Newcastle NSW)

Glenn’s interests include environmental ethics and policy, Australian environmental history, ecologically sustainable development, trans-disciplinary approaches to ecosystem health and complexity theory and its application to the environment.

Emeritus Prof. Valerie Brown, AO (Emeritus Professor of the University of Western Sydney and Visiting Fellow and Director, Local Sustainability Project, at the School of Resources, Environment and Society, Australian National University)

Val has worked in a range of health and ecology projects including projects to link public health and environmental governance in Australia, Malaysia, Fiji, and China, teaching programs linking Environment and Health in Nepal and Sydney and developing an interactive knowledge management framework for sustainable development in the local government sector. 

Dr Colin Butler (Research Fellow, National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health, Australian National University, Canberra)

Colin specializes in health, ecosystem health, population and poverty reduction. He is a co-ordinating lead author for the chapter on human well-being for the scenarios working group of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and has co-founded a non-government organisation, BODHI, that supports health, education, and environmental projects in India and Tibet.

A.Prof Pierre Horwitz (Director for the Consortium of Health and Ecology in the Faculty of Communications Health and Science and Associate Professor in Environmental Management in the School of Natural Sciences, Edith Cowan University, Perth, Western Australia)

Pierre’s current research interests include the relationships between human health and the health of their surrounding ecosystems; developing participatory involvement in environmental issues; developing broadly based indicators for assessing agroecosystem health and policy formulation.

Dr Anne Neller (Program Director, Healthy People – Sustainable Communities, University of the Sunshine Coast)

Anne’s current research areas include environmental epidemiology, evaluation of ecosystem health, health and environment data linkage and indicator development. Anne is involved with the Institute for sustainability, Health and Regional Engagement; sits on the En Health Council of the National Public Health Partnership and is involved with the editorial committee of the Journal of the Australian Institute of Environmental Health.

Ms Glenda Verrinder (Lecturer in Public Health, Department of Health and Environment, La Trobe University Bendigo)

Glenda’s research interests include ecological sustainability and health, health promotion and public and environmental health in rural areas. She is a co-editor and co-author, along with Val Brown and others, of the recently published text Sustainability And Health: Supporting Global Ecological Integrity In Public Health.
