New Victorian tobacco laws

New tobacco laws have taken effect from 1 March 2006. The new laws will:

  • ban smoking in most enclosed workplaces;
  • ban smoking, the promotion of tobacco products and the sale of tobacco products at underage ‘music/dance’ events;
  • ban smoking in covered areas of train station platforms, trams shelters and bus shelters;
  • ban ‘buzz marketing’ and non-branded tobacco advertising; and
  • strengthen laws to enforce the ban on cigarette sales to young people.

For more information regarding these laws, please visit the Department of Human Services’ Tobacco Reforms website.

Graphic cigarette pack warnings

From 1 March 2006 all tobacco products imported and manufactured for retail in Australia are to be printed with new graphic health warning labels showing a range of smoking-related conditions. Health warnings will occupy 30% of the front and 90% of the back of pack, with a graphic appearing on both front and back.
For more information about the new graphic pack warnings, please visit the Department of Health and Ageing website.
