By supporting innovative research we increase the impact of health promotion and public health programs.

Research

Why support research?

Research is essential to build knowledge and encourage innovative solutions. At VicHealth, research complements all of our health promotion investments. We support a mix of investigator-led research, strategic research and evaluation research to build evidence for health promotion interventions.

By supporting excellent research, improving the overall skills of researchers, providing networking opportunities for researchers and connecting research to policy and practice, we increase the impact of health promotion and public health programs.

Our annual investment in research projects, fellowships and scholarships, and centres of excellence in research and practice is approximately $6 million. Over the past 15 years we have invested more than $65 million in over 400 individual public health research projects to help improve the health and wellbeing of all Victorians.

VicHealth's new knowledge policy

VicHealth has a strengthened focus on ‘knowledge’. We have identified an openness to support a wider range of knowledge-related activities, a wider range of knowledge categories, and a new set of challenges for the organisation to do more than simply fund research. We have opted to organise our knowledge activities through four key elements: knowledge production, synthesis, translation/transfer and evaluation. Knowledge is now central to the identity of VicHealth, at the core of our functions and a driver of values. Go to Policy Paper and Discussion Paper.
