Mental health and wellbeing: It's everybody's business
In recognition that VicHealth is leading the understanding of how you promote mental health, we hosted the 5th World Conference on the Promotion of Mental Health and the Prevention of Mental and Behavioral Disorders at the Melbourne Convention Centre in September 2008.
This biennial conference is organised by the World Federation for Mental Health, the Clifford Beers Foundation, the Mental Health Program of the Carter Center, and supported by the Global Consortium for the Advancement of Prevention and Promotion in Mental Health (GCAPP).
From Margins to Mainstream: 5th World Conference on the Promotion of Mental Health and the Prevention of Mental and Behavioral Disorders explored new ways that individuals and organisations from a range of sectors can promote mental health and prevent mental illness. The aim of this conference was to confirm that mental health promotion is no longer at the margins but rather firmly established in mainstream research, policy and practice arenas.
There is strong evidence indicating that differences in access to socio-economic resources result in higher levels of mental and physical illness for those who are most disadvantaged. Consequently, this conference developed strategies which address health inequalities for those at the margins of society.
From Margins to Mainstream attracted practitioners, researchers and policy makers from a broad range of sectors, including those within education, physical activity, justice, planning, the arts, technology and human rights – to name just a few. This provided delegates with examples of good practice across different sectors, and highlighted the local, regional and international partnerships that can be created to promote mental health and prevent mental illness.
