Alcohol strategy and policy
Reducing harm from alcohol is a strategic objective of VicHealth.
VicHealth alcohol strategy 2011–14
The VicHealth alcohol strategy 2011–14 provides guidance to our strategic goal to reduce harm from alcohol. The strategy is linked to other VicHealth activities, such as participation, health inequalities and nutrition. It aims to focus on a select number of substantive activities:
- policy and regulation
- cultural change
- influencing the alcohol market
- community support
- knowledge building.
Advocacy work
VicHealth advocates for changes to alcohol legislation. Our policy submissions to government are based on evidence from research, which indicate best-practice strategies for reducing the social impact of alcohol consumption.
VicHealth is a member of the Alcohol Policy Coalition, an alliance of health agencies including the Australian Drug Foundation, Cancer Council Victoria, Heart Foundation and Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Centre. Through the Alcohol Policy Coalition, VicHealth works to produce and disseminate evidence-based policy advice to state governments. Take a look at the APC’s position statements and submissions.
VicHealth is also a member of the National Alliance for Action on Alcohol (NAAA) currently compromising of over 52 organisations aiming to pool their collective expertise to address Australia’s drinking problems. Read the NAAA’s position statement.
