Healthy eating

Why invest in healthy eating?

Healthy eating is more than just eating nutritious foods. It also encompasses the inherent cultural, economic and social factors of buying and preparing food, and sharing it with others.

VicHealth promotes and invests in healthy eating because it is necessary for maintaining physical health and mental wellbeing. It is also important because poor diet and nutrition lead to ill health and high financial costs.

Irregular access to safe, nutritionally adequate, culturally acceptable food from non-emergency sources is know as food insecurity.

Food security broadens the traditional concept of hunger and embraces a systemic view of the causes of hunger and poor nutrition within a community, while identifying the changes necessary to prevent their occurrence. The notion of ‘food security’ underpins VicHealth's investments in healthy eating.
