Physical activity programs

VicHealth works with a diverse range of organisations to get people involved.

VicHealth promotes physical activity through sport, active travel and active recreation programs. These programs aim to increase opportunities for participation in physical activity across the community.

Active recreation:  physical activity done for leisure.  Active travel: non-motorised transport, such as walking, cycling, skating, skateboarding and scooting.

Through improving access to and participation in sport and active recreation, VicHealth aims to address mental and physical health concerns by:

  • increasing opportunities for social connection
  • reducing race-based discrimination and promoting cultural diversity
  • promoting respectful relationships and preventing violence against women.

Sport and active recreation programs

Our long-standing partnership with sport is critical to increasing participation in physical activity. VicHealth is working to enable the sport sector to lead and innovate; to increase participation rates in sport and create sporting environments that are safe, accessible, inclusive and equitable for all in our community.

We run a range of programs, such as the State Sports Association Active Participation ProgramParticipation in Community Sport and Active Recreation program, Active Club Grants scheme and the Healthy Sporting Environments program.

Program funding recipients should refer to the  Funding page for information related to their current funding.

Active travel

Swapping motorised transport for more active forms of transport allows people to incorporate physical activity into their daily routines.

VicHealth has funded a variety of initiatives to promote active travel, such as Victoria Walks and Streets Ahead.
