Tobacco reforms
VicHealth advocates for tobacco control policies and regulations that support the creation of healthy environments in regard to tobacco control.
Tobacco laws
New tobacco laws took effect 1 March 2006. These new laws:
- ban smoking in most enclosed workplaces
- ban smoking, the promotion of tobacco products and the sale of tobacco products at underage ‘music/dance’ events
- ban smoking in covered areas of train station platforms, tram shelters and bus shelters
- ban ‘buzz marketing’ and non-branded tobacco advertising
- strengthen laws to enforce the ban on cigarette sales to young people.
For more information about these tobacco laws, visit the Department of Human Services’ Tobacco Reforms website.
Graphic cigarette pack warnings
From 1 March 2006 all tobacco products imported and manufactured for retail in Australia are printed with graphic health warning labels showing a range of smoking-related conditions. Health warnings occupy 30% of the front and 90% of the back of the pack, with a graphic appearing both front and back.
For more information about the graphic pack warnings, visit the Department of Health and Ageing website.
