VicHealth’s Changing Our Game – Profile Raising to Advance Gender Equality in Sport for Women and Girls Initiative 2017 - 2020
Gender equality is a critical determinant of health and wellbeing. Females remain under-represented in sport – both on and off the field – in participation, media coverage and leadership positions. These inequalities send a damaging message not just to our female athletes but to all women and to our society as a whole.
Sport provides a valuable setting to change social norms, attitudes and culture to advance gender equality. VicHealth has been proudly championing the important role women all over Victoria and Australia play in society, and in today’s context, in sports leadership, management, media and professional athletes.
VicHealth’s focus on women in sport forms part of our overarching commitment to achieving gender equality across the community and building a culture of respect and non-violence.
What is the VicHealth’s Profile Raising to Advance Gender Equality in Sport for Women and Girls Initiative?
The Profile Raising to Advance Gender Equality in Sport for Women and Girls initiative is a new VicHealth investment which aims to increase the profile of women’s sport, improve attitudes towards gender equality in sport and promote participation for women and girls over a three year period (2017 to mid-2020).
We want to work with sports organisations who can create millions of opportunities to reach and engage Victorians with important messages around gender equality in sport. Together we want to create a program of activity that captures the minds of the Victorian community and promotes the role of women in sport and the benefits this creates for all.
By ‘profile raising’ VicHealth means strategic marketing and communications activity that can help to deliver on the objectives of this initiative. You should develop an overarching plan which may include: media opportunities, branding rights, member engagement, provision of assets, digital and social activity that help to promote gender equality and raise the profile of women in sport. We welcome innovative ideas and strategies from applicants that can help deliver this important initiative.
Elite sporting teams, State Sporting Associations and National Sporting Organisations could share in up to $3.3M in funding available over 2017 to 2020 to deliver profile raising opportunities which support gender equality in sport for women and girls over the next three years. Funding amounts of $100,000-250,000 per annum will be available, with a view to having 3 year partnerships with each funded organisation.
VicHealth will be funding a small number of elite sporting teams, State Sporting Associations and National Sporting Organisations who best address the selection criteria below and can deliver on our program objectives.
Profile
You will drive public conversation and action around the role of women in sport, gender equality, gender equality in sport and women’s participation in sport and physical activity. VicHealth will partner with organisations that have strong reach to our target audiences and who can utilise their marketing expertise to create unique marketing opportunities and shared impact. Successful applicants will also be required to promote related VicHealth campaign activity on these topics utilising your channels, ambassadors and other key assets to help us achieve impact.
Organisational attributes
VicHealth wants to work with sporting organisations that can maximise impact, propose and trial new ideas and support initiative evaluation. VicHealth will partner with organisations that have creative and bold ideas to champion gender equality and create shared profile opportunities. To create a consistent experience for consumers it will be important, particularly with campaign activity, that funded organisations can deliver campaign activity and assets in line with VicHealth guidelines and requirements. Delivering strong value and return on objectives across all initiative elements is crucial for success.
Organisational leadership in gender equality
VicHealth has a long history of working to improve gender equality in sport. With this investment we want to partner with elite sporting teams, State Sporting Associations and National Sporting Organisations who also see advancing gender equality as part of everyday business. VicHealth is seeking to partner with organisations that are committed to the issue of gender equality and to raising the profile of women’s sport. We will see that your organisation walks the talk by demonstrating commitment to increasing female representation in leadership and decision making roles – including on your board, demonstrating leadership in promoting gender equality in your organisation, to the sports sector and general public, and improving policy and practice within your own organisation to make it more inclusive for women and girls.
