Victorian designers, creative thinkers and social entrepreneurs are being urged to put their heads together to develop solutions to boost young people’s resilience and mental wellbeing as part of the Victorian Design Challenge.
A joint initiative between VicHealth and the National Gallery of Victoria, the inaugural Victorian Design Challenge opens today and calls for designers to form teams with professionals from other sectors to come up with new ideas to increase the resilience of today’s young people.
A prize of $30,000 will be awarded to one winning team to help fund further development and prototyping of their design.
VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter said VicHealth was excited to see what Victoria’s brightest creative minds would come up with.
“Research shows young Victorians with strong resilience are less vulnerable to depression and better able to cope with the ups and downs of life,” Ms Rechter said.
“We also know young people will need to adapt and cope with challenges that are very different to what their parents faced.
“An increasingly competitive global job market, the increase in digital technology, increased automation and over-exposure to online content are important issues we need to tackle.
“This challenge is all about combining the creativity of the arts sector with the expertise from the business world in developing new solutions that empower young people so they are resilient and prepared for what the future may offer.
“VicHealth is thrilled to partner with the National Gallery of Victoria on this exciting initiative and we look forward to seeing the creative solutions designers come up with to support young people to improve their resilience.”
The Victorian Design Challenge registrations open today 17 November 2017 and closes on 7 March. A Challenge Information Session will be hosted by the National Gallery of Victoria and VicHealth on 1 December at NGV International. Successful entries will be notified in March 2018, with the live challenge final to be held in June.
