This evidence summary outlines current trends in obesity and healthy eating in Australia and Victoria. It also gives an overview of the impacts of an unhealthy diet, as well as barriers and enablers to changing the eating patterns of a population. It has been informed by recent research and policy documents.

Promoting healthy eating is one of five strategic imperatives in the VicHealth Action Agenda for Health Promotion. VicHealth recognises the many health benefits of healthy eating. This evidence summary draws upon the best available evidence, while recognising the barriers and enablers to changing the eating patterns of a population. It acknowledges that health inequities exist in Australia and Victoria, with overweight and obesity and some dietary risk factors more prevalent in certain population groups. It recommends that a multi-faceted approach targeting food systems and the food environment is required to improve eating patterns and reduce the burden of obesity and other diet-related diseases across the population.
