We know the vast majority of Victorians think it’s important that sporting clubs provide an environment that makes women and girls feel welcome, and provides leadership opportunities for women and girls.

Women’s participation in sport is increasing in Victoria, particularly in AFL and cricket. Sporting clubs are looking for ways to make their environments welcoming and inclusive. They recognise it is important to adapt to this changing environment in order to grow and maintain their supporter base.
Clubs are busy places and often staffed by volunteers. They need easy and attractive ideas to help them create inclusive and welcoming environments for women and girls1.
We asked our Leading Thinkers, Professor Iris Bohnet and the Dr Jeni Klugman, global leaders in gender equality and behavioural insights, to come up with a list of their top ten ideas to help sporting clubs achieve better gender equality. These ideas are aligned with some of the most advanced and cutting edge global thinking in gender equality.
27 gender assessments* were reviewed, including 12 international audits, 10 Australian audits and four local/municipal council audits. Based on this review, the Quick Wins Checklist at the top of this page was developed as a short and sharp list of ten most powerful, simple and often zero-cost ideas that a grass-roots sporting club can implement easily.
While many of the actions sound simple, they are proven to make a difference in shaping role models and busting stereotypes. They can have a real impact on making a club a welcoming environment for all.
Over the next year the Regional Sports Assemblies are implementing the checklist with sporting clubs and asking them to commit to two actions.
196 percent of women and 92 percent of men think that is important that sporting clubs provide an environment that makes women and girls feel welcome (IPSOS 2016).
