Historic day as world-leading vaping legislation passes the Senate

Media Release 2 min read
Two friends are walking along the beach in winter with their arms around each other. They are rugged up and smiling.

VicHealth welcomes the passing of world-leading legislation in the Senate to protect young people from vaping harms and the predatory tactics of Big Tobacco and Big Vape.

This legislation puts vital protections in place to protect young people from toxic and highly addictive vaping products. We welcome the passing of this world-first legislation in the Senate, that will:

  • Keep vapes out of reach of children by banning and restricting importation, manufacturing and supply
  • Support adults to quit smoking by restricting access by ensuring vapes can only be sold in pharmacies following a conversation with a pharmacist.
  • Put a stop to the predatory marketing and advertising of vapes to kids and young people
  • Introducing penalties for non-pharmacy retailers who possess vapes, while ensuring individuals are not punished.

VicHealth CEO, Dr Sandro Demaio said this federal legislation would safeguard young people from these toxic and dangerous products.

“There is no more urgent health issue than the resurgence of Big Tobacco as they push vapes to a new generation, seeking to profit from addicting a whole generation of young people to nicotine,” Dr Demaio said.

“These products are dangerous. They're harmful, they're addictive, and they're damaging the health of our young people.

“We welcome the Senate passing this legislation and applaud the Australian Government for taking strong action and leading these reforms. This will cause a major disruption to the tobacco and vaping industry and protect young people from the sale of vapes, which for too long have been sold down the road schools at corner stores alongside lollies and chewing gum.

It will mean up to 1,000 fewer teenagers will get hooked, every single week.”

VicHealth is committed to working alongside all levels of government and welcomes the Government’s investment in prevention campaigns.
