VicHealth Acting CEO, Associate Professor John Fitzgerald, invites Melburnians to show their support for Evans this Friday by jumping on their bike to join in the celebrations.

“Roll Up is one of seven projects in our MOTION program, which is about improving people’s health by offering fun ways to get involved in the arts and community events, have a laugh with friends and get active at the same time”, Assoc Prof Fitzgerald said.

The public reception for Evans, celebrating his success at the 2011 Tour de France, is expected to attract thousands of people to Federation Square.

“The VicHealth MOTION projects show how the arts can provide alternative ways to get physically active and involved in your community. Melbourne is renowned for its abundant cultural calendar and Roll Up provides a fun, safe and secure cycling solution for getting to gigs and gatherings,” Assoc Prof Fitzgerald said.

Roll Up is an initiative of The Squeaky Wheel, the team behind Melbourne Bikefest. Pip Carroll, Creative Producer at The Squeaky Wheel, said Roll Up is a fantastic way to encourage Melbournians to consider cycling as a mainstream transport choice.

“Riding a bike to a community, cultural or arts event with friends has great benefits for both your health and the environment. Free bicycle parking has been growing in popularity around the world so we’re excited to offer a dedicated service for Melbourne,” said Ms Carroll.

“Roll Up is the true red carpet VIP experience – we even valet your helmet,” she said.

Celebrations to honour Cadel Evans will be held at Federation Square at midday on Friday 12 August. Roll Up’s valet bike parking service will be available at Birrarung Marr from 10am.
