The Melbourne Stars has today announced a new partnership with VicHealth’s H30 Challenge campaign that will become the club’s Official Hydration Partner for the upcoming cricket season.

This innovative new partnership will see the Melbourne Stars encouraging fans to take VicHealth’s H30 Challenge and make a simple 30-day pledge to replace every sugary drink they would normally drink with water.

VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter congratulated the club for taking a leadership role in addressing the high intake of sugary drinks in the Australian diet, saying the Stars would inspire cricket fans across the state to make the switch to water.

“With nearly two-thirds of Victorians currently overweight or obese, reducing intake of excess kilojoules through drinks is one simple way to promote a healthier diet.

“We’re excited to see a high-profile club like Melbourne Stars take a leading role in raising awareness of the benefits of switching sugary drinks for water,” Ms Rechter added.

Sugar sweetened beverages are the largest source of sugars in the Australian diet and high intake of these sugary drinks are associated with poorer health outcomes, such as increased risk of weight gain and increased risk of tooth decay.

Melbourne Stars CEO Clint Cooper said the club was delighted to be able to set a good example for the Victorian community.

“I was shocked to learn that a 600mL sports drink can contain up to 11 teaspoons of sugar. The players all need to hydrate correctly in the lead up to and during the KFC T20 Big Bash League, particularly during the hot summer months and the best way to do that is to choose water instead of sugary alternatives.

“We encourage our supporters to join us in making the switch to water by ditching sugary drinks. Sign up for the 30-day challenge and make the pledge today,” he said.

Participants can join the H30 Challenge at any time convenient for them, for a 30-day period.
