With the health and lifestyle benefits of participation in sport widely recognised, opportunities for participation in the community have increased and improved. However, VicHealth identified specific segments where participation in sport remains problematic: those with a low income, people with a disability and new arrivals to Australia. This report provides a better understanding of the barriers to participation and ongoing involvement in sport among these target groups. Key learnings: consider sustainability of events, after the event itself; flexible delivery of programs; recognise the range of barriers that may prevent people from participating in sport.
