Top paddle boarder Heath Meldrum will offer stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) lessons to Victorian women this summer as part of ‘Coasting’, a VicHealth and Surfing Victoria initiative to encourage more women to get active.

The current Victorian SUP Marathon champion will be teaching basic paddle boarding skills at various locations across Port Philip Bay from November to January including Aspendale, Brighton, Frankston, Geelong, Mentone, Mornington, Sorrento and St Kilda.

“Most Victorian women struggle to meet the recommended 150 minutes of physical activity each week,” says VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter. “Being physically active can reduce the risk of developing anxiety, depression, musculoskeletal conditions as well as more serious conditions like Type 2 diabetes, cancer and heart disease.

“Stand-up paddle boarding is a great way to increase physical activity. I paddle board whenever I get the chance. It’s great fun, easy to master and gentle on the joints, making it suitable for women of all ages. VicHealth has teamed up with Surfing Victoria to offer women stand-up paddle boarding lessons to encourage women to try something different. A lesson is a great day out alone or with friends.”

The introductory class to stand-up paddle boarding is also being offered at seven SUP schools across the Bay as part of the ‘Coasting’ initiative.

“Stand-up paddle boarding is a relaxing, low impact and easy to learn activity that is a fun way to enjoy the outdoors and water,” says Surfing Victoria CEO Adam Robertson.

“Stand-up paddle boards are much longer, wider and more buoyant than 'normal' surfboards, allowing you to effortlessly balance on them and propel yourself along the water with the paddle. It is fun, safe and super easy to learn.”
