VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter has again accepted the challenge to take a break from alcohol for the month of February as part of the 2013 febfast campaign.

VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter has again accepted the challenge to take a break from alcohol for the month of February as part of the 2013 febfast campaign.

On the cusp of her second year of febfast, Ms Rechter said she understood why nine out of 10 previous febfasters said they’d do it again.

“Last year, I joined thousands of Australians and took a break from alcohol for 28 days and I’m happy to report it was enlightening and even enjoyable,” she said.

“I’m not a heavy drinker, but febfast helped me to understand just how prolific alcohol is in our everyday lives – how easy it is to slip into the habit of having a few at the end of the working week because that’s what everyone else does. It’s fantastic how febfast challenges the cultural myth that alcohol is an unavoidable part of being social.

“By the end of February, I felt more energetic and had a personal sense of satisfaction for completing the challenge. I didn’t feel like I had given up something, I actually felt as if I’d gained a lot and contributed to raising funds for young Australians.”

A VicHealth survey of 1300 febfast participants, conducted in 2011, shows that the vast majority of febfasters reap ongoing health benefits.

Participants surveyed named saving money, getting more sleep and losing weight as the leading benefits and nine out of ten participants said they would do it all again.

On top of the short-term wins, many who took part in the annual fundraiser reported longer term benefits.

Following febfast, two-thirds of participants set aside alcohol free days each week, half cut down on alcohol consumption and 70 per cent said they are now more conscious of how much they’re drinking.

The money raised during febfast helps young Australians take control of their lives and address their alcohol and drug problems.
