This program aims to get women to become more active through participation in sport.Apply now
VicHealth’s Active Women and Girls for Health and Wellbeing Program* will create new opportunities for female participation in sport, increase the profile of females in sport while improving sports policy and practice to create inclusive environments for females.
Gender equality is a critical determinant of health and wellbeing. Females remain under-represented in sport – both on and off the field – in participation, media profile and leadership positions.
Sport provides a valuable setting to change social norms, culture and behaviour to advance gender equality. VicHealth’s focus on women in sport forms part of our overarching commitment to achieving gender equality across the community and building a culture of respect and non-violence.
For all of these reasons VicHealth is investing $7 million over three years (2017 to 2020) through the Active Women and Girls for Health and Wellbeing Program.
This VicHealth investment has three focus areas:
- Participation – to create new opportunities for women’s participation in sport, to engage those inactive and somewhat active women and girls to become more active
- Profile – to increase the profile of women’s sport, improve attitudes towards gender equality in sport and promote participation for women and girls
- Organisational Leadership – to improve sport policy and practice, to create welcoming and inclusive environments for women and girls
